MANILA, Philippines — Ifugao 8th District Representative Teody Baluigtad filed House Bill 42188, or the Original Foreign Music Sang by Filipinos Development Act that aims to protect local artists and further promote Filipino music, specifically during wedding receptions.

HB 42188 will require newlyweds who play Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” during their wedding reception to pay Reciprocal Equity Fees equivalent to the amount that will be charged to an Original Pilipino Music (OPM) being played in a wedding where Sheeran is from.

Newlyweds who does not want to pay the aforementioned Reciprocal Equity Fee has the option to instead play a “tagalized” version of the Ed Sheeran hit and receive incentives as well for doing so.

Singer and songwriter, Pogie Palcasid president of the Organisasyon ng mga Mang-aawit ng Awit ng Iba (OMAI) will offer his own Filipino rendition to the romantic hit.

“There is preferential treatment for foreign music. You can only just turn on the radio to recognize that,” Palcasid said.

Entitled ‘Pag-iisip Nang Malakas sa Labas‘, Palcasid channeled his romantic side in order to do justice to the hit single and swoon potential new followers that might be too stingy for Ed Sheeran’s music. With lyrics such as, “O sinta, mamahalin kita kahit tayo ay sitenta na.

Palcasid was quick to point out newlyweds who does not prefer “Thinking Out Loud” can choose from other tagalized foreign music.

“I think weddings are beacons of culture and taste.” said singer and composer Tim Paradas.  “To promote culture, we should really listen to local songs during weddings. It promotes nationhood.”

He added, “And doing so not only helps repair the damaged OPM industry, but also helps repair our bruised egos.”
