MANILA, Philippines — After issuing a P250,000 fine to Purefoods Star Hotshots import Daniel Orton for saying that Manny Pacquiao playing in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) was a joke, the league has decided to file a class action lawsuit against the entire country for agreeing with the import’s statement.
PBA Media Chief Bureau Willie Warcial said on Saturday, that Filipinos must be fined for “agreeing with comments that are disparaging, disrespectful of, and offensive to a professional player and head coach of a PBA team.”
“That’s a joke,” said Orton, 24, who put up only 6 points and 3 rebounds in 19 minutes as he battled foul trouble. “That’s part of the joke I was talking about.”
“Professional boxer, yeah okay. Congressman, alright. Professional basketball player? No. It’s a joke. Seriously, it’s a joke,” the former NBA player added.
“We will file the necessary paperwork next week in order for the case to proceed in court,” said Warcial about the landmark case. “A nation who thinks that a boxer turned TV host, turned politician, turned evangelist is not deserving to be a professional basketball player should definitely have their noggins checked.”
Warcial believes that somebody who brought pride numerous times to our country deserves to get paid professionally in any fields that he or she chooses.
“Kahit na maging professional cross stitch designer pa sya, aba’y dapat natin syang suportahan,” he added. “Dahil si Manny Pacquiao ‘yan. Kahit na maging professional dragon dancer or stand-up comedian pa ‘yan, wag na wag natin syang pagtatawanan.“
PBA is seeking to impose a fine of P250 to each and every 101,207,066 Filipinos who agreed with the former NBA player’s sentiments.
“Alam naman ng lahat na isang malaking katatawanan ang paglaro ni Manny sa PBA,” said Hanson Reyes, one of the defendants who agreed with Orton. “At dahil dito, naging katatawanan din ang PBA sa pagpayag na mangyari ito.“
“Kung papipiliin ako between Bubble Gang and a PBA game involving Pacquiao & Kia, hulaan mo anong papanuorin ko for the sheer comedic value?” asked Reyes hypothetically.
Another defendant, Roberto Kho, a sports enthusiast and basketball fanatic agreed with Orton as well.
“Ang dami-daming hard working basketball players dyan na hirap makapasok sa PBA na mas deserving pa,” he said. “Pero itong si Manny, ginamit lang ang pangalan at connections nya para maachieve ang dream nya.“
Kho added, “Barely working ka na nga bilang isang mambabatas ng Sarangani tapos magbabasketball ka pa!?“
