MANILA, Philippines — Multinational toy and board game company Hasbro Inc. announced today that they are set to release a limited edition version of Monopoly, specifically catered and designed for the Philippines.
Monopoly: Meralco Edition is a spin-off to their hit board game which is named after the economic concept of monopoly—the domination of a market by a single entity. Subtitled “The Fast-Dealing Electricity Distribution Game”, the Meralco Edition will see players assume the role of the famous power distributor and move around the gameboard signing contracts, installing electric meters to houses and businesses, and collecting money from their opponents, the ultimate goal being to drive them, the Filipino people into bankruptcy.
“We were inspired by the monopolistic deeds of your power distribution company,” said Hasbro Inc. Creative Director Voltair Watts. “Who would’ve thought that ‘total amount due‘ in bold letters, doesn’t necessarily mean total amount due?!”
He added that only a deceptively monopolistic company would try to insert a “deferred payment” entry into consumer’s monthly electric bill, in the hopes of pulling a fast one on millions of Filipinos pending a Supreme Court decision.
That is why we have studied their business model and adapted it to our popular board game. Now every Filipino can experience how it feels to dupe or deceive their customers.
Players who passes the “GO” space would receive money, as it signifies their company collecting monthly payments from unsuspecting costumers. The “Go to Jail” space has also been replaced by a more apt “Go to Press Conference” space explained Watts.
“It wouldn’t be a realistic game, specifically for the Philippine market, if someone from the power industry goes to jail.”
Aside from property spaces littered around the game board, player will have to look out for penalty spaces that would possibly cost their version of Meralco to lose a significant amount of money.
“Players would cringe upon landing on either the ‘refund space’, the ‘hire topnotch lawyers space’, the ‘Meralco Advisory space’ and the most costly of all, the “(allegedly) Bribe DOE or ERC Official space’, said Watts.
“We hope Filipino board game enthusiasts would have a great time playing this game, as much as Meralco does. “
If successful, Hasbro will release other editions fit for the Philippine market, such as a PLDT, Maynilad and Binay Editions.
Monopoly: Meralco Edition will soon be available at all leading toy store and hobby shops.
