MANILA, Philippines — Just days after the passing of “Comedy King” Dolphy, politicians are now issuing their sincerest and heartfelt sadness over the decision of Haagen Dazs to cease its operation in the country.
Premium ice cream Häagen-Dazs, a unit of US-based global food giant General Mills Inc., is saying goodbye to the Philippines.
General Mills cited “challenging business environment” as reason for leaving after 12 years of operation.
“The decision to close our business in the Philippines was made based on its performance over the years. General Mills’ business in the Philippines has been consistently challenging in all the 12 years that we’ve operated here,” General Mills Philippines said in a statement.
“The decision has been made at the highest levels in General Mills after consideration of all options. We simply can no longer sustain our business in the increasingly challenging environment we face,” it added. (via Rappler)
Manila 7th Representative Gregorio C. Nolasco in a statement said: “It is with a heavy heart that we must bid adieu to one of the most delicious treats our tongue has ever touched. Haagen Dazs’ departure would surely be missed by the upper-class and upper-class-eque.”
Senator Manny Villar also expressed his sympathy together with his wife Cynthia Villar during an interview.
“Napakalungkot isipin na ang isang produkto tulad ng Haagen Dazs ay mamamaalam na sa ating bansa.
Madalas Hindi man natin ito natikman dahil sa estado ng ating buhay, alam naming isa itong malaking kawalan sa ating pang araw-araw na buhay (It’s sad to think that a product such as Haagen Daz is already saying goodbye to our country. Although we always never enjoyed it due to our status in life, we know that this is a huge loss to our everyday lives.”
Not to be left behind, former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo sent her statement to media outlets. It reads: “The whole elitist’s grief for Haagen Daz signifies that we are a nation of RICH destined for GREATNESS. It was a GIFT by the SUGAR GODS and we will be forever be grateful for bringing sweetness to our lives.”
Other politicians, took to Twitter to express their sadness about Haagen Daz’s business decision:
Haagen Daz will close its stores located in Shangri-La Plaza and Eastwood City by the end of August while other branches have been already closed since June 30.
*Laughter is STILL the best medicine. Rest in peace Dolphy, you will be missed.
