MANILA, Philippines — Impeached Former Chief Justice Renato Corona, now a private citizen, sought the help of World Boxing Organization (WBO) for a possible investigation into the outcome of his impeachment trial.
In a 2-page letter to WBO President Paco Valcarel, Corona insisted that he was innocent of any impeachable offense hurled against him and hopes that the WBO could also assign 5 judges to review his case and possibly overturn the decision; similar to what they did with the Pacquiao-Bradley bout.
Five judges convened by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) unanimously scored in favor of Filipino ring icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao after reviewing his controversial split decision loss to American Timothy Bradley, which took place in Las Vegas June 9.
RingTV reported that the five judges, commissioned by WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, unanimously scored the bout in Pacquiao’s favor, 117-111, 117-111, 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113.
In what was one of the most shocking decisions in boxing this year, Bradley was named the victor in their WBO welterweight clash last June 9, with judges Duane Ford and CJ Ross scoring the bout 115-113 in his favor. Only Jerry Roth scored the bout for Pacquiao, 115-113. (from ABS-CBN News)
Valcarel has promised to look into the matter as soon as possible, but Corona reiterated the urgency of the matter. This, after the Judicial Bar Council of the Philippines (JBC) has extended the deadline for submission of nominations for the next Chief Justice to July 2.
Earlier this week Malacañang has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with ABS-CBN to air Pinoy Big Brother Chief Justice Edition after the final list of nominees has been decided. Filipinos will be able to vote for their choice and the nominee with the lesser votes would be evicted every week. The show would run until only one nominee remains and be proclaimed the new Chief Justice on the Big Night.
“Kailangan madesisyonan agad ng WBO ang kaso ko, bago pa makapagtalaga si Presidente ng papalit sa akin (WBO should immediately decide on the matter, before the President can choose my replacement),” Corona said when asked for comments.
Corona revealed that he is enjoying life as a private citizen and spending more time with his family in their non-air-conditioned home. He said that he feels for Manny Pacquiao when he lost in a controversial split decision against Timothy Bradley in their match. News reports points to China being the reason for the defeat (full story here). But with the WBO proclaiming the Sarangani Lawmaker as the unanimous winner today, the former Chief Justice was said to have been given new hope.
He ended the interview saying, “Ipinauubaya ko na sa WBO ang desisyon, dahil ang mga empleyado ng Supreme Court, na may pasuot-suot pa ng pulang damit dati at mga taong bayan ay mukhang nakalimutan na ako (I leave my fate to the WBO, because the employees of the Supreme Court, who even wore red shirts before as well as the Filipinos, seems to have forgotten about me already).
