In a press statement, the production company expressed its disappointment with the cleanup of selected shooting locations that the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) bared the other day during an interview.
In the interview, MMDA Chairman Francisco Tolentino said “I think they selected Pasay Taft Rotonda. Magulo talaga ang area. So it’s about time that we redo the area because it will be shown worldwide. So it’s an eye-opener for us na ayusin namin ang Pasay-Taft Rotonda.”
Filming locations included Navotas Fishport, Intramuros, San Andres Market, Pasay Taft Rotonda, Marikina City Market, Ramon Magsaysay Blvd., and others. Director Tony Gilroy said that they specifically chose these locations around the Philippines due to its filthiness, and cleaning them up will be in violation of their artistic freedom and detracts the ambiance that the movie is aiming for.
“They could’ve chosen another country if they wanted a clean environment to shoot at,” said an anonymous insider from the production company.
Sensing the irony to what they did, MMDA would return all the garbage and litter that they have accumulated to its original location where they were found; to try and change the mind of and appease Director Gilroy. “Baka dagdagan pa namin yung kalat dun sa mga lugar kung gusto nila, para maengganyo ulit (We might even add more trash to the area if they want, so that they would be more enticed),” said Tolentino.
This development would be in stark contrast to what happened to actress Claire Danes, who shot a movie here in the Philippines, sometime around year 1998. She was so appalled by her stay in our country that in an interview with Vogue Magazine, she described Manila as a “ghastly and weird city.”
In another interview, this time with Premiere Magazine, she stated “The place just f@%king smelled of cockroaches. There’s no sewage system in Manila, and people have nothing there. People with, like, no arms, no legs, no eyes, no teeth. We shot in a real hospital, so takes would be interrupted by wailing women — like ‘Cut! Screaming person.’ Rats were everywhere.“
The government did not improve the sewage system despite the comments made by Danes, as evidenced by floods across the city throughout the years. Instead, the City Council declared the actress Persona Non Grata and banned all her movies from being shown.
Then President Joseph Estrada even said that “She should not be allowed to come here. She should not even be allowed to set foot her.”
