ORTIGAS, Pasig City — Meralco has announced another price hike to their electricity charges. This after the Metro suffered power outages during typhoon Pedring.
In a press statement released to the media, it says “…that due to the damages brought about by typhoon Pedring, almost 1.9 million residents were left without power yesterday. In light of this, our company will undergo drastic repairs to our affected customers. With that said, we believe that the cost of these repairs, rewiring and reconstructions of electrical post should be the burden of the customers and not to us, the supplier.”
A company spokesman had this to add: “This is normal practice in businesses as big as ours. Customers have been shouldering operation costs, government imposed taxes and etc. We’ve been doing this since anybody can remember and we as a company should cut our costs and expenses, especially this time of the year because everybody knows we set up elaborate Christmas lights and decors on our head office here at Ortigas. Being an electrical company does not mean that we get to use electricity for free. It’s not like we use the excess money from our over collection of monthly bills to customers to pay for our Christmas lights you know. “
A company bigwig was heard whispering to another: “It doesn’t hurt that we are the only electricity supplier in the city. That’s why we can get away with stuff like these… FTW!”
Consumer watchdog group Kontra Lokohan sa Kumpanyang Overpricing at Yabang (KOLOKOY) spokesman Ponciano Soledad was fuming mad when asked for comment about the statement made by Meralco. “Sumusobra na sila! Kaliwa’t kanan na ang taas presyo sa merkado, at nasalanta pa ang karamihan sa bagyong Pedring, tapos may gana pa silang mag announce ng dagdag singgil!?” (They’re going overboard! Price increases in the market are happening left & right, and we even got struck by typhoon Pedring, and they even had the guts to announce another price hike?!) said Soledad.
Daniel Lamanzano, a member of KOLOKOY proposes a boycott to the services of Meralco and it’s sister companies. “Ngayong darating na kapaskuhan, wag po tayong magkabit ng mga Christmas lights sa ating mga kabahayan. Wag po tayong gumamit ng tubig sa pagluto ng Spaghetti. (referring to Maynilad, also a part of Metro Pacific Investments.) Wag na po din tayong manuod ng channel 2, na wala ding namang ginawa kundi magpalabas ng mga commercial ni Kris Aquino at Bimby! At last but not the least, tigilan po natin ang pagsuporta sa tambalang Angel Locsin at Phil Younghusband!” (This Christmas season, let us not attach any Christmas decor/lighting around our house. Let us not use water to cook our Spaghetti. Let us not watch channel 2 as well, because they are not doing anything but to show commercials featuring Kris Aquino & Bimby! And last but not the least, let us stop supporting the Angel Locsin & Phil Younghusband loveteam!)
Department of Energy secretary Jose Almendras was asked for his reaction and all he had to say was: “I told so…“
