In an ambush interview following his comments that he wanted the Senate RH Bill debate to be in Filipino, the actor turned senator nonchalantly told the media that his comments were inspired by his favorite morning TV shows. (I can’t fathom why we cannot use the Filipino language on our ongoing debate regarding the Reproductive Health Bill. If a foreigner like Spongebob Squarepants and Sakuragi is capable of speaking the Filipino language so that they could be understood by our viewers, how come us lawmakers can’t do the same?) , said Lapid.
When asked if he does indeed watch the shows, Mr. Lapid even volunteered to sing the intro song of Spongebob Squarepants in Filipino to prove that he does. He added: “Tignan mo, nung dating nasa Cartoon Network pa sila Blossom, Buttercup at Bubbles eh panay ang ingles nila. (Look, Blossom, Buttercup & Bubbles were speaking in English when they were at Cartoon Network. Who can understand them? I always wondered why they always kept on punching Mojo Jojo. But when they transferred to TV5, it became clear to me why they fight him.)
When asked if he had any comments to other performers who speaks English and not Filipino, Mr Lapid was quick to add, and said: “Ang pangarap ko ay isang Pilipinas, na kung saan ang lahat ng ating mga napapanuod sa telebisyon at sinehan ay nasa wikang Filipino, mapa-Harry Potter man yan o di kaya’y Lord of the Rings. (I dream of a Philippines where everything that we watch on television and movies are in the Filipino language, whether it be Harry Potter or Lord of the Ring. And I have another wish for Mr. Leonardo DiCaprio to translate the movie Inception to Filipino, so that I can fully understand what is happening, because I am perplexed to what that top’s connection is to the story.)
When asked by a reporter to translate the term Reproductive Health Bill to Filipino, the Senator told us that the interview is over and that he was running late for an appointment.
