LOS ANGELES, California — FOX announced a new reality television singing competition aimed primarily at the increasing ‘Fil-Am’ demographic here in the US, entitled ‘Filipino-American Idol’.
Filipino-American Idol will have four judges, namely Nicole Scherzinger, Bruno Mars, apl.de.ap and Vanessa Hudgens. They will be joined by comedian Rob Shneider as the show’s host. Reports that singer Enrique Iglesias turning down the offer to be one of the judges are still to be verified.
We’re ecstatic to welcome Nicole, Vanessa, Allan, Bruno and Mr. Schneider to the Filipino-American Idol family,” Cecile Goutaz, CEO of FremantleMedia said in a press release Sunday morning. “They are talented people who represents a different side of the music industry, who has now crossed into mainstream culture with their unique artistry, style and flair. Rob on the other hand, could bring his distinct style of humor to the weekly show and might make getting eliminated a less painful experience for the contestants.”
Simon Fooler, one of Idol’s executive producers, explains the concept behind the show’s creation.
“We witnessed how Filipinos were so passionate about these competitions, especially Jessica Sanchez’s second place finish behind Philip Philips last season,” said Fooler. “We were bombarded with hate mails, complaints and was even threatened to be investigated by lawmakers from the Philippines.”
“That is why we created Filipino-American Idol. It is for the Filipinos who can’t seem to support their own Philippine, Pinoy Idol or other various talent competitions held in their country. We hope that this show would appease and satiate their hunger and penchant for recognition from contests of other countries even though they already have a lot of surplus of local talents.”
“There’s no doubt that the next idol will be Filipino!”
Contestants with Filipino lineage will meet host Rob Schneider and the new judges’ panel when auditions begin today in New York City. Other stops on the Idol audition tour include Chicago, Los Angeles, Charlotte, San Antonio, Baton Rouge and Oklahoma City.
Rumor has it that Donald Trump will follow in Filipino-American Idol’s footsteps and is set to announce Miss Pinay-Universe, a beauty pageant composed of contestants with Filipino heritage/lineage all across the globe. This after the pageant received flak from Filipinos feeling that Janine Tugonon should have won.
Filipino-American Idol is produced by 19 Entertainment, a division of Core Media Group and FremantleMedia North America, Inc. The show premieres on FOX in March 2013 while the 12th season of American Idol airs on the 16th of January.

Fil-Am Idol sure sounds interesting but Miss Pinay-Universe? Seriously? Defeats the purpose of the word ‘Universe’ in it. Whoever thought of that was obviously not thinking.
